Culture is our Business
Fotografie, 130×180 cm, Zeitleiste, 2004
Photograph, 130 × 180 cm, installation, 2004
A newspaper photograph shows the defence of the press quarter at the Berlin street battles in the November Revolution of 1918–19. According to international law, the use of the photo in 1989 – when new-economy magnate Bill Gates acquired the image rights through the purchase of a private photo collection – had already long been public domain. In the nineteen-nineties, however, Gates proceeded to make some of his pictures available over the internet for fee-based download (CORBIS). The picture of the defence of media power by revolutionary troops is cleverly associated by Schaber with the question of common property of collective images and historical sources.
