Kembrew McLeod (US)
Freedom of Expression TM
Zertifikat des U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, 1998–2004
1998 ließ sich Kembrew McLeod den Ausdruck ‚freedom of expression’ (‚freie Meinungsäußerung’) vom U.S. Patent and Trademark Office als eingetragenes Warenzeichen schützen.
U.S. Patent and Trademark Office certificate, 1998–2004
In 1998 Kembrew McLeod had the phrase ‘freedom of expression’ trademarked by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. With the aim of alerting the general public to the absurdity of this privatisation of supposed freedom of expression, McLeod staged a wide-scale media campaign. As the legal owner of Freedom of Expression®, he threatened to take legal action against anyone using his trademark without express permission. The first victim of this threat was the punk magazine – founded by McLeod for this purpose – entitled Freedom of Expression.
