Der (oder die) Handelsbauftragte ist unter anderem zuständig für die Verhandlungen über das kürzlich zum Staatsgeheimnis erklärte Anti-Piraterie-Abkommen ACTA. Die Mitglieder der Beratungsgremien dürfen laut KEI die streng geheimen ACTA-Unterlagen einsehen.
